Title: Problem registering
Post by: coothead on 7 Jan 2021, 02:15:30 pm
Hi there Jason,

I suggested to someone who was having  PHP problems to come here.

Unfortunately, he informs me that he is unable to register.

Unable to register at forums.cutcodedown.com.
I fill in all required information, enter the verification code.
Did that half a dozen times, always get same error message:

The following errors were detected in your registration.
Please correct them to continue:

Please enter the verification code below to continue to the results.

I also notice that the last member to join these forums was...

ChristineS on 9th November 2020.

Is it a coincidence that no one has registered since then?
Can you do a check on the system?

Locked up!

I didn’t see him in the recent riots...

I think his forum notifications are not working and he hasn’t manually logged in.

I was taking a small vacation from coding, figures something like this crops up.

I had integrated recaptcha, and it looks like it was conflicting with my custom skin even though it worked when I tested it at deployment. Something between deploying it and people being unable to register broke it.

It should be working now without recaptcha, so here come the spammers.

I'm just annoyed it took word of mouth through a third party source, instead of using the contact form on the main site like the blasted instructions say.

Because that form works, I've tested it up, down, left, right and sideways, but NOBODY reported a problem through it. BIG GIANT HUFFING YELLOW BOX SAYING IT... nope.

If I have time later today I'm gonna modify that text to make clearer that if there are ANY registration problems, go to that form. NOT that it is likely to make anyone actually do it for some jacked up reason.

Nothing new then,  but don't shoot the messenger.   :)

Covid-19 will probably take him out for you.   8)

You are making a lot of big assumptions, number one being that people actually know how to read, number two being that people actually are capable of understanding what they read, and number three that people are actually able to follow instructions.

It's like asking customers to compete a questionnaire after being refused entry to a night club! Far easier for them to find another accommodating venue.  Plus instills a bad impression of further possible problems.

Does the error logs and verification not trap incomplete registration attempts?

How about emailing failed attempts?

Thanks to spammers there are so many failed ones that you can't find the forest for the trees. Legit attempts get buried in the ****storm.
